Healthy Lifestyle Wards Off Cancer

Living healthfully by eating nutritiously and exercising regularly can lower the risk of developing cancer by 45 percent. A review of 12 studies showed that people who followed cancer prevention guidelines for diet and exercise were as much as 61 percent less likely to develop or die from cancer. Guidelines recommend choosing whole over refined grains, limiting processed and red meat, avoiding excess alcohol, and eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily, as well as getting regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight. In the case of breast cancer, each recommendation lowered the risk by 11 percent, so following two recommendations would reduce risk by 22 percent.
