The National Institutes of Health Clarifies Lactose Intolerance

The tell-tale signs of lactose (sugar found in dairy products) intolerance—bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea after eating dairy foods—are all too familiar to anyone suffering from this condition. Unfortunately, many people assume that their gastrointestinal woes are the result of consuming dairy products, without consulting a health care professional to rule out other possible causes. They often, unnecessarily, spend a lifetime avoiding dairy—an important source of vital nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D.
